How this started

Wes Hollis had worked construction and hauling around Tuscaloosa for years when he bought a single truck and one container in 2015. He'd spent long enough on job sites to know exactly what went wrong with dumpsters: containers that turned up late or in the wrong size, prices that changed once the load crossed a scale, and out-of-town haulers who didn't know where the area's construction debris was actually supposed to go.

Eleven years on we run a fleet across Tuscaloosa and Tuscaloosa County, and the operating principle hasn't moved. Tell people the truth about what they need, protect the property, know exactly where the debris goes, and charge the number that was quoted.

What we actually do differently

We know where the debris goes. Tuscaloosa's carts are for household garbage, and the city won't collect a contractor's construction debris - its own rules put that on the contractor. So renovation and demolition waste has to go to a licensed C&D landfill, a separate stream from the household garbage the city hauls to the Black Warrior Solid Waste Facility and the trash it takes to the Eagle Bluff Landfill. We already know that routing, run a tarped truck as Alabama law requires, and route each load efficiently. On volume, that's the whole job.

We recommend smaller containers. This one surprises people. Dense material - tile, shingles, concrete and heavy dirt spoil - reaches a container's tonnage allowance while it still looks half empty. Recommending the 15 yard instead of the 20, or a dedicated 10 for the concrete and dirt, costs us revenue and saves the customer money. We do it anyway.

We're built for a college-town turnover market. Tuscaloosa runs on the University of Alabama, and that shapes the work. The huge student-rental turnover each August - whole houses and apartments to clear against hard move-in dates - is a volume-and-timing problem we're set up for, staging containers and mapping swaps to the deadline for landlords and property managers.

One number, tarped loads. The flat rate covers delivery, the rental period, collection, the C&D-landfill disposal and a stated tonnage allowance, with the overage rate quoted in the same breath. And every load leaves tarped and secured, as Alabama requires. No fuel surcharge, no environmental fee appearing on an invoice for the first time.

Tuscaloosa is the fifth-largest city in Alabama and the county seat, on the fall line of the Black Warrior River, with the University of Alabama at its center and Northport as its twin across the water. That mix splits the work several ways. New construction and additions - around campus, the growing subdivisions, and the Mercedes corridor at Vance - produce bulky, light debris that wants a larger container. Renovation of the city's older homes and rentals gives up dense plaster, tile and layered flooring that wants a smaller one. Roof tear-offs after the region's storms need their own box. And nearly every job that moves earth produces heavy spoil that needs its own container.
